MR Enterography

What is MR Enterography?

MR Enterography is a new diagnostic tool in evaluating Small Bowel Disorders.  MR enterography, is highly sensitive and specific for Crohn's disease.  MR Enterography has the benefit of being radiation free which is especially important for younger patients who require frequent follow-up examination.

MR Enterography is an MRI scan with oral contrast to image the small bowel. This can help your health care provider diagnose small bowel disorders and their complications and help direct treatments.  This exam is often used as an alternative to ionizing radiation techniques such as small bowel follow-through or CT Enterography.

What will I experience?

After you arrive, you will be asked to begin drinking oral contrast material (Volumen) in timed intervals and will have an IV placed. Once this is complete, you will begin your exam by lying on the MR scan table with your arms resting above your head. You will then be given contrast material through the IV line that was placed earlier. You will be asked to hold your breath for several 20 second scans.

How should I prepare for the test?

You should not eat 4 hours prior to your scheduled examination time.  You will be given one tablet to relax your stomach activity (Hyoscyamine) approximately 15 minutes before your exam.  This tablet may cause drowsiness so it is strongly recommended that a driver accompany you on the day of your scan.

How long does the test take?

You will check in 1 hour and 15 minutes prior to your scheduled examination time to register and begin drinking the oral contrast. The MR scan portion of the examination takes approximately 30-45 minutes.

What should I do after the procedure?

You will be monitored briefly following the examination and your IV will be removed 10-15 minutes after the exam.  Resume all of your previous medications.  Your MR images will be interpreted by a board certified radiologist, and the findings will be sent to your doctor. Your doctor will contact you with the results.
