What is
Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring?
Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring is a non-invasive exam used to
detect coronary heart disease (Atherosclerosis) or calcium
build-up in the coronary arteries of the heart. The amount of
calcium present is related to your risk for a heart attack.
Who should
be considered for this procedure?
Individuals who may be a candidate for this procedure have any
of the following risk factors:
How is the procedure performed?
This painless,
non-invasive exam is performed using a super-fast GE CT scanner
with multi-detector spiral technology. You will lie down on the
CT exam table and the technologist will place EKG leads on your
upper chest to track your heart rate. You will then be asked to
hold your breath while the images are taken. It takes only about
20 seconds to obtain the images and the radiation exposure is
very minimal, less than a regular CT scan and there are no
injections or needles used. Once the exam is completed, a
board-certified radiologist will interpret your results and
calculate your cardiac score.
What can
my cardiac score tell my doctor and me?
Your cardiac score can detect early signs of heart disease and
your risk for heart attack. It can tell you if you have build up
of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to your heart.
Your cardiac score is checked against a national database of
many thousands of patients. This allows comparison of your score
to others of the same age and sex. Your doctor can use this
information to determine the appropriate treatment, medication,
lifestyle changes, or if further testing is needed.
Will my insurance pay for
the Coronary Calcium Scoring Exam?
Most
insurances do not pay for this exam.
Payment is required upon completion of your exam. If
you wish to submit a claim to your insurance company,
documentation will be provided.
