DEXA Bone
Densitometry
Osteoporosis
is the slow and progressive process of losing bone
mineral. Osteoporosis can result in fractures of the hip
or spine causing chronic pain, disability, physical
deformity, and loss of independence. Early detection of
osteoporosis, aided by Bone Densitometry testing helps to
prevent fractures.
Associated Radiologists offers DEXA
Bone Densitometry testing at all its Centers.. DEXA bone densitometry testing is
both a good first
step to determine if there is bone mineral loss, and is preferred for patients being actively
treated for bone mineral loss. This extremely low-dose
radiation technology provides an objective, quantifiable
measurement of bone density. It is safe, accurate,
non-invasive and painless. The test takes only 15
minutes. A complete report is provided depicting not only
bone density compared to others of the same age and sex,
but more importantly we compare your results to those of
young healthy bone based on nationally accepted standards
from the World Health Organization.

When
should women have a bone densitometry test? |
For women, the
best time to have a bone densitometry test is around
menopause, when the estrogen production in your body
starts to decline and you become most susceptible for bone
loss. It is also a good time to establish a baseline
measurement for future comparison. |

How do
I prepare for the test? |
There is no
preparation required for this test. |
Today's
testing technology is safe, convenient and effective. The
amount of radiation is smaller than the amount used in a
standard chest X-ray. |
What
happens during the procedure? |
The bone densitometry
test is a simple, noninvasive and painless procedure.
In most cases you do not have to undress. You lie on
a padded table while an imager passes over your
body. |
How
long does the procedure take? |
The bone densitometry test can
take anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes and requires no
special preparation, medication, or injection. |
Why is
this test important? |
The information from a bone
densitometry test allows your doctor to determine whether
or not you are at a risk for a fracture. The lower your
bone density, the higher your risk for fracture. Test
results will help you and your doctor decide the best
course of action for your bone health.

therapy, until test results have stabilized.
