Patient preparations for Ultrasound examinations

General Prep Info

Each type of imaging exam has its' own guidelines. Special instructions for your exam will be given at the time of scheduling. For certain procedures, we will contact you 24-48 hours prior to your exam with preparation-specific instructions.

The following are a few general guidelines that apply to
every imaging exam:

  • Notify your physician and our staff if there is any chance that you may be pregnant or are currently breastfeeding.

  • Discuss any special needs - such as dietary and/or physical limitations with us in advance.

  • Check with us in advance about recovery time or if a driver is needed so you can make necessary arrangements with work and family.

  • Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing; be prepared to change into a patient gown if necessary.

  • Arrive 20 minutes early to verify your registration information and provide further health information for your exam.

  • Bring prior x-rays or scans with you to the exam if you are instructed to do so.


ABDOMINAL US / GALLBLADDER, LIVER, (Upper Quadrant)

The patient must not have anything to eat or drink after midnight, not even water.

If patient is having a Pelvic exam as well, they have to drink 32 ozs of water, 1 hour before the test, and cannot void until after the exam.


ABDOMINAL DOPPLER

(Same prep as Abdominal Ultrasound.)


AORTIC ULTRASOUND

The patient cannot have anything to eat 4 hours prior to the exam.


BLADDER ULTRASOUND

The patient must drink 32 ounces of water and be finished drinking one hour prior to their exam. They cannot urinate until after their exam.   


HIPS / INFANT ULTRASOUND

Do not feed the baby for 2-3 hours before exam.

Parent(s) should bring a bottle with them. It may be necessary to feed infant during the exam.

If the baby is breastfed - bring a bottle with water


HYSTEROSONOGRAM

For postmenopausal patients :

The same prep is followed as for routine Pelvic Ultrasound.

The patient should take Motrin 1 hour before the exam to reduce cramping and should bring a sanitary napkin in case of spotting.

Patient should not be bleeding at the time of study if possible.

For menstruating patients:

This exam is performed after the last day of a period, not while patient is bleeding. The patient should call to schedule as soon as their period begins.

The patient must refrain  from intercourse from the time her period begins until after the exam is perform so there is no chance of pregnancy.

The same prep is followed as for routine Pelvic Ultrasound.

The patient should take Motrin 1 hour before the exam to reduce cramping and should bring a sanitary napkin in case of spotting.


PELVIC with or without TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND

In order to properly perform this ultrasound test, the patient's bladder must be full. The patient needs to drink 4 x 8 ounce glasses (32 ounces total) of water, 1 hour prior to the exam, and cannot void until after the exam.


PELVIC ULTRASOUND WITH OVARIAN DOPPLER

PREGNANCY ULTRASOUND

For the first trimester, the patient will be required to drink 32 ounces of water.

For Second and Third trimester, the patient will need to drink three glasses of water one hour prior to exam, and to not void until after the exam.


PREGNANCY ULTRASOUND WITH BIOPHYSICAL PROFILE

The patient will need to drink one glass of water one hour prior to exam and to not void until after the exam.


PYLORIC / INFANT ULTRASOUND

Do not feed the baby for 2-3 hours before exam.

Parent (s) should bring a bottle with them. It may be necessary to feed infant during the exam.

If the baby is breastfed - bring a bottle with water.


RENAL ULTRASOUND (KIDNEY)

Drink 16 ounces of water 1 hour prior to the exam.

The patient cannot void one hour prior to the exam.


RENAL DOPPLER ULTRASOUND (For Hypertension)

Patients cannot have any food or liquid for 4 hours prior to their exam.

Drink 16 ounces of water 30 minutes prior to the exam.


TESTICULAR ULTRASOUND

The patient should avoid using any powder in this area after showering.
