ESOPHAGRAM (Barium Swallow)

Fluoroscopy uses x-rays to capture a moving image of certain organs while they are functioning. The tissues of the upper GI tract are similar in density, so Barium is used to help outline them. The liquid barium has a chalky taste, although the taste can be masked somewhat by added flavors.

The technologist will give you a barium shake to drink. The Radiologist will watch you swallow the barium and take images as it goes to your stomach. During the process, you may be asked to turn from side to side and hold different positions, to enable the Radiologist or technologist to capture views from several angles.

When the exam is over you may be asked to wait until the technologist or radiologist reviews the images.

Your results will generally be available to your physician in approximately 2-3 days, depending upon whether we need to obtain other outside comparison exams.

Precautions:
Because of the risks of radiation exposure to the fetus, pregnant women are advised to avoid this procedure.
